Junior Galas

Latest news, entry forms, results etc will be posted in the Junior Gala News area as they become available.

The Junior Gala is the chance for a swimmer to swim in a race and gain a time for an event - which also means they can be considered for inclusion in a Leander Competition team.

The results give the club, swimmers and parents a way of tracking performance through the year by following improvements through the Junior Gala Series. All young swimmers are encouraged to take part as the purpose of our club our club is to provide competition opportunities.

The Junior Galas are open to all members of the club aged between 7 and 12 (age as on the 31st December of the year).

Swimmers are eligible to swim for the club in some inter-club galas as soon as they are 8 years old and it is from the Junior Galas that the Team Selectors are able to gain and understanding of the relative abilities of each child coming up to competition age, as well as helping to spot older improving swimmers. Second claim swimmers, unless first claim to Nova, can swim for Time Only.

The aim of these galas is to give children of all abilities the opportunity to take an active part in competitive swimming. Children 9 years and under (on 31st December) will compete in 25 metre events (freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly), whilst those 10 and over will swim in 50 metre events (except 25 Metre butterfly for 10 years). Parents - please do not enter your child for strokes or distances that they are not confident with; if you are not sure then please ask one of their coaches for advice.

Except for the Individual Medley, points will be awarded to the first five swimmers in each event (excluding butterfly for 7 & 8 year olds) from each of the following age groups - 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 years old. These points will be awarded at each of the galas and at the end of the year the overall top three swimmers in each age group will be awarded prizes.

There are also the Jonathon Preston trophies, for the boy and girl swimming all four strokes at each of the galas, and showing the greatest aggregate improvement over the four galas.

All prizes will be awarded at the Club Presentation Evening.
PS the galas are great fun and a good social occasion too!
