A small but dedicated contingent of Leander Masters swimmers braved storm Jorge to travel to Swansea for the Swim Wales Long Course Championships this weekend.

The weekend started with an Octopus race off in the 400m freestyle, with Rob and Leona in the same heat. Rob took the win by a solid 18 seconds, setting a long course Masters PB and a club record, whilst Leona came away with a silver medal for her age group.

The 50m breaststroke races saw both Leander swimmers come away with bronze medals. Rob later swam in the 100m breaststroke, in the correct lane. His Welsh language has improved since the last time he swam in Swansea, when he swam in the wrong lane and proclaimed to officials that the lane numbers were all in Welsh.

Shortly after, Leona swam an excellent 50m butterfly, beating her Long Course PB by 2 seconds and taking another bronze medal.

Day Two started with the Welsh National anthem (St David’s Day), albeit some English swimmers took a stand by sitting through the music. Leona swam 200m freestyle in the morning, taking another silver medal and realising the hard way that distance races aren’t as enjoyable long course as they are short course. She finished the day with a Masters PB in the 50m freestyle.
