The Stage 1 trophy galas are a great platform for all of the county’s swimming clubs to showcase their emerging swimming talent (8-11 years) in some friendly competition. They also give many swimmers their first opportunity to represent their club in a team competitive environment rather than the individual competition of our Junior Galas or Club Championships.

Leander has a strong history of success in the Stage 1 Gala; our A team won all three rounds in 2018 and our B teams, when fielded, are always very competitive too.

Ignoring the potential weight of history upon them, our Stage 1 class of 2019 kicked off this year’s event with our A and B teams competing at Hucknall and Retford respectively on Saturday 26 January.

The B team’s results really stands out. With a good mix of Junior Squad members to support them, swimmers from our development squad really stepped up to the occasion to secure an incredible second place against stiff competition from CABSC, Worksop, Kimberley, Arnold and Bramcote.

Wayne Cummings, one of our B team managers on the night said; “It was an absolute pleasure to be at poolside on Saturday night with Hasley, Anna and the team. There was some awesome swimming from everyone there and the team spirit was immense. Seeing some of development squad take so quickly to being part of the team and not show any nerves was brilliant.

“Special mention has to go to Aarav for stepping into the 50M Free relay at such short notice just so the team wouldn’t suffer was a real highlight.

“Our second place is a result to be proud of and reflects all of the hard work put in by all of our coaches to give Leander such strength in depth.”

Over at Hucknall our A team again rose to the occasion to come away with the trophy ahead of the teams from Sherwood (A), Southwell, Newark, Carlton Forum and Nottm Falcon.

With more swimmers making their debuts alongside our experienced veterans (at 10 and 11 years old!), the quality of performances and PBs achieved more than complimented the performance of the B team.

Kelly Ashforth, one of our A team managers on the night said “Coming away as runaway winners with 205 pts on the night was a wonderful team performance. The whole team were fantastic and the standards of our swimmers was clear to see. All in all it was a great night for Leander.”

The results from both teams will be published in our Members area and on Swim Club Manager very soon.

Our Guide to Galas gives more information about the range competitions Leander competes in, including information on selection and expectations.
