CHILD WELFARE and MEMBER BEHAVIOUR

This page, and linked pages, contain the club policies on behaviour and child welfare.

Club Welfare Officer - Jackie Kendall (0773 6601 582), 'jackiekendall@talktalk.net'

As a large competitive club we expect high standards of behaviour for swimmers, officials, parents and our spectators.

All involved with the club need to set a good example to fellow members/swimmers at training and competition, also to competitors and rival club members at galas. Show them why Leander is best!

The Club follows the ASA/Wavepower recommendations for child safeguarding and protection. For complete descriptions of these see this link to the swimming.org website. Also see the links below:

Anti-Bullying Policy - Summary

This document sets out a summary of guidelines and procedures relating to bullying, harassment and intimidation of members. A complete statement can be found here

NLSC complies with the guidance given by the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA). The club is committed to providing a caring, friendly and safe environment for all members so that they can swim and participate in a relaxed and secure atmosphere. Bullying of any kind is unacceptable at our club. If bullying does occur, swimmers and parents should be able to tell and know that incidents will be dealt with promptly and effectively. We are a telling club – this means that anyone who knows that bullying, harassment or intimidation is taking place is expected to tell the club welfare officer or any committee member.

What is Bullying?

Bullying is the use of aggression with the intention of hurting another person. Bullying results in pain and distress to the victim.

Bullying can be:

Physical

pushing, kicking, hitting, punching or any use of violence

Racist

racial taunts, graffiti, gestures

Sexual

unwanted physical contact or sexually abusive comments

Homophobic

because of, or focussing on the issue of sexuality

Verbal

name-calling, sarcasm, spreading of rumours, teasing

  1. Parents will be informed and asked to attend a meeting to discuss the problem.
  1. An attempt will be made to help the bully (or bullies) the change their behaviour.
  1. If mediation fails and the bullying is seen to continue then the club will initiate disciplinary action under the club constitution and code of conduct.
  1. In cases of serious bullying the incident(s) will be referred to the ASA for advice.
  1. If necessary, and appropriate, the police will be informed.

Spectators Code of Behaviour

As a spectator in any activity held by or under the auspices of the club, you are expected to follow the guidelines below in regard to your conduct during any such activity or event.  Your attitude during training and competition can have a significant effect on the swimmers behaviour and attitude towards other swimmers, the coaches and officials as well as other spectators.

You should:

·         Respect the decisions of officials and teach young people to do the same.

·         Never ridicule or scold a young swimmer for making a mistake. Positive comments are motivational.

·         Avoid trying to coach your swimmer(s) during training or competition

·         Give encouragement to all the swimmers where possible.

·         Condemn the use of violence or bad behaviour in any form, whether it is by other spectators, coaches, officials or swimmers.

·         Show respect for the clubs opponents. Without them there would be no competition.

·         Do not use violence, harassment or abuse in any form (that is, do not use foul language, or harass swimmers, coaches, officials or other spectators).

·         Applaud the other teams as well as your own if they win.

·         Support all the swimmers in the club during a gala, not just the winners.

·         Be aware of child protection policy and the clubs general welfare requirements.

Code of Conduct for Coaches/Officials

At all times it is expected that NLSC coaches and officials should:

  • Be conscious of always presenting a professional appearance on the poolside and be conscious of the example this sets to the swimmers and the image this presents of the club.

  • Place the safety and welfare of the swimmers / participants above all else.

  • Accept responsibility for all actions taken.

  • Be impartial.

  • Avoid any situation, which may lead to a conflict of interest.

  • Be courteous, respectful and open to discussion and interaction.

  • Arrive in good time to organise and control their activities

  • Meet the commitments they make to the club

  • Be prepared to assist swimmers and their parents/guardians or carers in any queries they may have and to take these forward to the committee any issues they are unable to resolve.

  • Accept and respect the role of officials in ensuring that competitions are conducted fairly and according to established rules. Know and abide by rules, regulations and standards, and encourage swimmers to do likewise. Accept both the letter and the spirit of the rules.

 Coaches should also:

  • Treat all swimmers fairly within the context of their sporting activities, regardless of gender, race, place of origin, athletic potential, colour, sexual orientation, religion, political beliefs, socio-economic status and other conditions.

  • Provide feedback to swimmers and other participants in a manner sensitive to their needs. Avoid overly negative feedback.

  • Where possible, involve the swimmers in decisions that affect them.

Code of Conduct for Parents/Guardians & Carers

NLSC is a competitive club, and in order to retain our level of success, it is important that full support is given to swimmers and club officials, coaches and teachers by parents/guardians and carers of swimmers.

Swimmers parents/guardians and carers are expected to:

  • Ensure that swimmers attend training sessions regularly, and that swimmers arrive in time to be ready on poolside before the session starts.

  • Inform the club of any health related issues that might affect a swimmer’s performance.

  • Focus on your child’s efforts and performance in a positive manner.

  • Never ridicule or yell at your child and other children for making a mistake or losing in competition.

  • Respect the judgement of all teachers and coaches and the decisions of any officials.

  • Support the Club in reinforcing its guidelines and policies, especially those relating to swimmers behaviour.

  • Support your child when he / she is selected to swim for the Club.

  • Ensure as far as possible that your child is available to swim when selected to swim for the club.

  • Make sure your child arrives in good time for competition and inform club officials as soon as possible of any possible delay.

  • Support the whole team at competitions

  • Make sure your child has the appropriate kit and equipment with them for training and competition.

  • Keep in touch with club activities through the website, newsletter, club officials and e-mail.

Club Photography Guidelines

Child Protection and Photography

TV, Video and Close Range Photography

It is the policy of Nottingham Leander Swimming Club to follow the ASA guidelines in relation to the use of video, or close range photography.

From time to time swimmers may take part in events at which photographic, or video equipment is used. We would ask swimmers and/or parents who object to the use of such equipment in the presence of their children, to inform the Club Committee in writing of their views.

From time to time video equipment may be used as a training aid; this is particularly true for swimmers in development training sessions. Again the committee will need to be informed of any objection to this.

Any photographs taken at swimming events may be used in the Club Newsletter, or made available on the club website in the members area (only accessible by club members). Photographs may also be used in press releases, but without names, unless permission has been requested and given. Again, if swimmers and/or parents do not wish photographs of themselves or their children to be used in this way, then please inform the Committee in writing of their views.

If you have any question about the above, or indeed any issues in relation to child protection in swimming please contact Sue Davis or any other member of the Committee,
